All about D-100 Drywall Corner Bead; D-200 Drywall Metal Trim; D-300 Drywall Reveal Trim

Recently DryWallTaping.ca completed a drywall installation project in downtown Toronto. What was unusual about this project is the type of drywall trim that we used. It is called D300 Drywall Trim and it is used to add a modern and unique touch to the interior design. This metal trim eliminates the need for baseboards creating reveals around the perimeter of the room and/or around windows and doors. This simple design approach at low investment and effort instantly gives your home a modern look.

D300 Drywall Trim is designed to provide crisp clean reveals around openings or at ceiling and floors. The holes and knurled surface provides an excellent ‘key’ for finishing with joint compound.
In the project mentioned above we installed the D300 molding around the entire perimeter of the walls creating 5” reveals from the floors. It definitely made an interesting interior expression with walls looking like they “float” inside the room.

With this Z-shaped pre-fabricated drywall construction you can intensify the “floating” effect by creating reveals at the top and bottom of your walls. This approach allows you to achieve an impression of an open plan and uninterrupted continuous line.

While traditional approach requires usage of base and crown moldings to hide imperfect transition from wall to ceiling and floor to wall, the D300 metal trim gives you a modern alternative that would serve the same goal but look much cleaner and less clustered.

If you favour modern aesthetics and would like to shift from traditional design, definitely consider using this fairly easy to construct type of drywall trim.

This is how this speciality metal trim looks in action

Since we already started talking about different types of drywall trims, it is worthwhile to mention the D-100 drywall corner bead and D-200 metal trims. The D-100 corner bead is used for corners to reinforce and provide excellent protection.

The D-200 drywall metal trim provides a neat finish and solid protection to gypsum wallboard at window and doorjambs where wood trim is omitted.
Drywall metal trim
The usage of both types of trims is characteristic to any quality drywall installation and ensures neat, sturdy and reliable base for further design elements.

DryWallTaping.ca’s portfolio features a couple of projects where the usage of D300 drywall trim was required over which we gained experience and expertise dealing with this type of material.

Drywall Installation and Taping prices in Toronto

Pricing for Drywall Installation Taping  Mudding and sending include materials  in GTA is pretty standard and varies only by cents.

Quotes for boarding and taping can differ from case to case. Here is what the quote will look like for a standard house like below:

The total square footage of this sample house equals 4360 Sq.Ft. That’s the main parameter used in calculating the cost of drywall boarding and taping.

How to calculate approximate cost of drywall boarding and taping?

The prices are calculated by taking the total floor area of 4360 Sq.Ft. and multiplying it by 4 to get the approximate total boarding area.

If a custom trim like D200, D300, D400, D4411  Channel Trim or D800 is requested then each project is priced individually and the total will depend on the amount of the custom trim used and the time required to install it.

How to choose the right drywall contractor.

Framing electrical and plumbing are done. Insulation is done. You passed all the inspections and now it is time to make your home look beautiful. Now it is time for most important visual part – finishing.
Choosing the right drywall and taping contractor is crucial for finishing part of the renovation. Choose wisely and screws will not pop-up through the expensive paint, drywall joints will not crack and avoid plenty of other disastrous things.

The best way to start is to look online at Home Stars or Handy Canadian for companies with decent reviews. Next is to call them up and talk. While at this evaluate the courtesy and time of response. The chances are that if they answer their phones or get back to you promptly, they will do the job the same way.

After you choose three companies and invited them to see the job ask their reps as many questions as you can and evaluate how knowledgeable they are. Ask them to submit written quotes and evaluate the time frames and prices.

If you chosen professionals companies, prices shouldn’t vary much, and now it’s just a matter of your personal preference and their promised time of delivery to choose your drywall taping contractor.

Good luck!

Framing Drywall Taping

Hello my friends,

Today I’m going to tell you about our project which was done at 10815 Bathurst St. Richmond Hill, ON L4C 9Y2 (at the corner of Elgin Mills and Bathurst):

The scope of work:

Framing
a) Slotted tracks
b) Heavy gauge steel studs
c) carrying channels
Insulation
a) sound safe
b) exterior walls insulation
c) vapor barrier
Drywall
a) fire rated
b) double drywall
c) water resistance drywall
d) brick pattern application
Taping
a) regular taping
b) fire taping
c) corner flushers
Also, I will give you some advice about purchasing materials and tools to use for drywall taping.
Ok, so let’s start with ordering the materials.

For this specific project we used Royal Building Supply. It was the only building materials supplier that I knew. He was referred to me by my colleague, who did all the brick and concrete work for this project.
Today my preferred supplier is Costa Building supply; they are always punctual and keep their promises.
If you are a contractor you probably know how to calculate your materials, but if you are a home owner and you want to do the labor part yourself, it’s better just to call the supplier and ask them to calculate materials that you will need. Home Depot, Rona, and Lowes are good for small stuff like screws, electric tools, and other things, but they have a very high price for framing, drywall, and taping materials.

Framing:

First, we mark all the layouts with spray paint on the floor. Then, we install the metal tracks on the floor and the slotted tracks on the ceiling using dewalt laser level in order to repeat the same wall direction on the ceiling.
Slotted track: we use a slotted track in order to allow for the movement of the roof in different weather conditions. For example, if there is snow on the roof, the roof bends inside the building and the drywall doesn’t break because of the flexibility of the slotted truck.
The walls are 16 feet high and there was also a fire separation, so we had to use heavy gage metal (16 gauge studs and trucks 4×8). Inside the studs we used a carrying chanell in order to support them and make the wall stronger. We used clips in order to attach the carrying chanel to the stud.
Fire separation: Because it’s two different units/owners on each side of the wall, the city requires fire separation. In addition, one of the units is a grocery store and the other is a dancing studio, so we had to install more than just fire insulation: the insulation we used was roxoull safe and sound in order to provide the most efficient sound and fire separation insulation.

Drywall:

Installation of drywall had to be done in brick style, and we had to use two layers of 5/8 inch thick fire rated drywall on each side of the wall in order to provide good fire separation. Also, the seams of the second layer of drywall cannot be in the same location as first layer.
We used blue water resistant drywall in the washrooms and denssheld in the tiled area in order to support strong base for tiles.
Reflected ceiling:
The walls were attached to reflected ceiling so there was a gap of 2.5 inches remaining. So what we did is: we filled about 7″ above the slotted truck with insulation and the rest we filled with fire calking in order to provide fire stopping in case of fire.

Taping:

In order to have a strong connection between the joints we used fiber tape: it gives the same effect as the metal grid in concrete – basically it’s a strong material that dries very fast and provides a very strong connection between the two drywall sheets (it’s called prefill or first coat).
The second layer is applied with compound in order to level the seams. Then it is sanded for a nice finish (we call it skim coat or finish coat).
On top of the walls we applied a layer of joint paper with compound in order to prevent it from smelling, just in case if we missed some spots with fire calking.
In the corners we also used joint paper in order to prevent the corners from cracking. We then applied a second layer of compound on the paper and leveled it with flashers – this is an easy to use tool in order to have your corners looks straight while using less time to sand.

Anyway, this was a good experience, but it is only one experience out of 15 years of I’m doing this every day. Every time I have new challenges; every time it’s a new project and every project is different and all of the projects have new things to learn, gain experience from, and problems to solve. I like what I’m doing and I hope you can do it yourself or call us to assist you with any task. We can also help you with some advice if you are not sure how to do something. I always have my phone on me and I’m always answering, so please don’t hesitate to call if you have any questions – I would be more than happy to assist you.

Commercial Seamless Drywall Installation

Commercial drywall usually is installed vertically standing, it’s easier to install and tape drywall seams after.

But on our recent drywall taping project on a 5000 sq. ft. condo on Wellington Street for Strathcona Construction we encounter different technic and at first were surprised with GC decision to install it two-sheets horizontally on walls plus cutting one of the sheets into two pieces.

After interesting debate we can see the point of the architect. Because the client is really concerned with the quality of finish he doesn’t mind spending more on getting a seamless wall. It is a visual trick that anybody can use on their own home’s project.

You cut one piece of drywall to make it 30’’ or so wide and install along the wall bottom. Than on top of it on the wall you install a solid regular 48’’ sheet and on top you put the rest of your bottom cut piece.

This way on a regular human body height on a long wall (and walls are really long at that condo) if you are using 12’ drywall you can see very few vertical seams, which makes the wall visually seamless.

Very smart decision and nice thinking about customer satisfaction.

D300 Drywall Trim

Our recent drywall installation and taping project in Kensington market Toronto had an architectural feature.

This D300 Drywall Trim is designed to provide crisp clean reveals around openings or at ceiling and floors. The holes and knurled surface provides an excellent ‘key’ for finishing with joint compound. For use with 1/2″ drywall to provide a 1/2″ or 5/8″ reveal.

D300 Drywall Trim

By design of the custom home we had to install the d300 molding around the perimeter of the walls 5 ” from the floor. From our 10 years of practice as drywall contractors in Toronto it was our approx 10th time we had to install this moulding. The Z-shaped d300 molding gives the interesting touch leaving drywall panels stand within half inch from the trim near the floor area, around the windows and door casings. D300 Drywall Trim is definitely a very beautiful modern design feature.

How much time does it take to do taping in 1000sq basement

Many clients ask us about how long it usually takes to do mudding, taping and sanding of a 1000sq ft basement or any other area for that matter.
We usually give up to one week for this drywall taping project. There are certain factors that affect the taping process. The main factor would be the temperature inside the basement and the humidity.

First coat called “prefill coat” and is done with SHEETROCK90 should take 90 minutes to dry in the ideal situation (90 here stands for the drying time in minutes).
First coat of Sheetrock on a 1000 sq ft we do within 1 day.
Same day we also put the paper on the corners, screws and prefill coat on the corner beads.

Ideal situation for taping would be a dry and warm space. This way we can do a “rough” sanding next day and put a second coat, this time using Compound to level the walls, put the second coat on the corners, screws and the corner beads.

After, it takes one to two days, depending on the temperature and humidity of the space to dry.

Third coat after rough sending is done with Compound again to smooth out the surfaces and we let it dry for another day.

Finally we sand and it is ready for primer.

So as you can see there are four actual labour days for the taping and 3 days for drying that gives us 7 in total.
We come back for touch-ups when needed but usually there is none required given the professional level of our employees.
