The Top 5 Reasons to Install Drywall at Your Home

DryWallTaping®

Building or remodeling an office, a commercial plaza, a restaurant, or your own home often involves the use of drywall. There are a lot of good reasons why. The wall system is high performing and durable. The majority of them are gypsum-based, though there are variations. Meaning, you’ll find several options available depending on your environment – moisture, fire prone, etc.

For those who are planning renovations and want to know whether drywall installation is a good option for them, consider the following these five reasons below.

Drywall installation is quick

Compared to other construction materials, drywall can be installed faster. The time you spend on fitting walls will be at least five times less if you hire a professional drywall contractor in Toronto. The buildout and installation of drywall varies according to its size and how many walls are involved.

Their weight also varies depending on the material they’re made of and the size of their walls. If you want the installation done by a drywall installation contractor, you will undoubtedly need their assistance.

The reason for that is that drywall finishing and taping require experience. The corners are especially susceptible to cracking if it is not done right. However, that can’t be considered as a disadvantage. All properties are structurally based on their walls. They influence the aesthetics and stability of any surface with their excellent drywall installation.

Easily repairable

Drywall plastering reduces impact resistance and therefore cracks and dents. Because such problems are often unavoidable, it’s a good thing that drywall can be fixed quickly.

Large holes can be patched even if they are enormous. The drywall in your home is not likely to need to be replaced unless it has been damaged by fire or water. In a matter of minutes, you can fix the drywall problem with a few simple repairs.

Drywall offers a variety of solutions

Walls and ceilings can be covered with drywall. When you combine lighting and the right painting service with wall and ceiling ideas, you can come up with hundreds of plans. A drywall partition can be used when you remodel a basement, split the office into several sections, or need space to accommodate the newborn.

The dry wall is soundproof

Soundproofing solutions can be provided by a drywall contractor if you are concerned about noise at your property. Wallboard can be actually used to isolate internal noises without increasing the wall’s thickness if the street is too noisy or if there is too much traffic noise coming from the street.

Fire-resistant Drywall

You should know that drywall is not fireproof, but it is fire resistant. As a result, it will continue to burn, but will slow down any further spreading of fire. The importance of this cannot be overstated. This will allow you to evacuate the building in time and, in turn, save your life.

Drywalls have many benefits beyond these, but these are the most important ones. An experienced drywall service company can offer a variety of options to meet all your needs. With the right interior painting service, drywall can also provide excellent thermal insulation, increased protection from mold, and stunning aesthetic results.

Once drywall has been installed and finished, it should last for a long time with little maintenance involved except for an occasional painting or washing. If any patching is required, usually fiberglass tape and spackle will take care of the repair. Usually, drywallers blend any patches with the existing wall by spackling about 10 inches outside a hole, then feathering the edges. That’s where the artistry of drywall comes into play.

Currently, most interior walls in the U.S. are constructed with 4” to 6” studs that are covered with sheetrock. The seams of the sheetrock or gypsum board are taped and finished with a joint compound and the ceiling and wall may be texturized with a joint compound using one of various techniques. All drywall is ultimately finished with an application of primer and paint.

The basic rule about drywall thicknesses is that an interior wall should use drywall that is ½” thick. However, in some states, drywall installers have to use drywall that is three-fourths inches thick, particularly if it is used between an attached garage and the home – installed as such to meet the fire rating requirements. Drywall installers and experts often recommend 5/8” boards for ceiling installation designs.

The “all-purpose” mud or spackle that is normally used is a heavy-weight substance when compared to the thinner “topping” drywall. The topping is used for final finishings or for seam or screw hole drywalling. Regardless of the type of spackle used, it usually needs a bit of thinning with water.

Drywall taping and sanding requires the use of a fiberglass tape that is normally self-adhesive, which can be thin or thick. However, some traditionalists in the drywall trade still rely on paper tape for manual taping. For drywall installers who are more innovative, a machine can be used that applies both tape and mud at the same time. Regardless of the method employed, a drywall installation or drywall taping and sanding takes perseverance along with patience and skill.

Drywall installers Drywall Services Toronto use one of various broad knives for finishing purposes. Joint or taping knives are available in 6” sizes for spackling over screw holes, a 10” size for coating corners and seams and a 12” width for applying a final coat. Drywallers insist that the key to finishing any panel with perfection is to make sure the knife stays flexible.

In order to understand how drywall is installed, you need to look at the basic structure of the wall. A bottom plate (about 2” x 4” or 2” x 6”) runs along the bottom part of the wall and a top plate of the same size runs across the top of the wall. If the house that is being drywalled was constructed in the past 30 years, it is likely that the studs are spaced 16” from the center of each stud to the next. Studs, in older homes, can be as much as 2 feet apart.

All the above details are common knowledge to experienced drywall installers. 10 Questions To Ask Before Hiring a Drywall Contractor In Toronto

Questions to ask your drywall contractor

Making updates and changes to your home or building a new one is stressful enough, without having to worry about cowboy contractors ruining your experience and wallet. A few simple questions before you hire someone could save you a lot of headache.

A highly qualified drywall contractor takes away a lot of the potential for frustration but can turn your dream home experience into a bottomless money pit. I’ve heard a lot of stories from many of my friends and clients about some terrible experiences with dodgy contractors who cut corners, avoid responsibility and are generally a pain to deal with.

But how do you know what to ask and where to start if you have never dealt with a drywall contractor before? The following 10 simple questions will help you choose the right drywall contractor and get the job done right the first time.

1. Do you have Liability Insurance?

You need to make sure your drywall contractor provides you a proof they have Liability Insurance before you pay them anything. This covers you for financial loss should the drywall contractor die, become insolvent or run away.

2. Are there any current or past disputes underway with the relevant construction authorities in your province or with a former client?

This will let you know about the drywall contractor’s general reliability and professionalism as well as the overall quality of their work.

3. Have you ever been declared bankrupt?

If your drywall contractor went bankrupt at some point it may mean a quick eject button on your project should they not have the financial resources to finish the job. A bankrupt company may disappear without warning leaving you with a half finished drywall project and the need for you to search for another drywall contractor willing to complete the job.

4. Do you work in the same area I’ll be building?

It seems self-explanatory, yet many people never ask this question. Your drywall contractor may not be interested in a project far from their office, where they have to travel. The drywall contractor may also need to hire sub-contractors they are not familiar with and these people may not be up to standard.

5. How long is your warranty and what does it cover?

A drywall contractor agrees to perform quality drywall installation and taping job and warrants against any defects in workmanship or materials supplied. Since it is not always possible to find these defects on the spot, such a warranty should extend to one year for residential units and sometimes longer for commercial properties.

6. Who supervises the drywall project?

This is important because the supervisor or project manager is the person who keeps everyone honest and insures the drywall job goes smoothly. When a project manager is onsite, higher quality work is performed. Look into their track record including past experiences and duration at current employer.

7. What about your drywall installers and tapers and their long-term employment?

A consistent and reliable trade base is essential to making certain the job will be finished on time with high quality results.

8. Can provide us with references of your recently finished projects?

This is absolutely a no-brainer. Try to see for yourself the drywall contractors’ recently completed work or at the very least talk with their clients. This way you can understand if the drywall contractor is doing the type of job you want for your home. Check out the quality of materials they use for their drywall projects. This way you can get feedback about customer experience and satisfaction.

9. What other projects will you be involved with while installing my drywall?

You don’t want the drywall contractor to take on more jobs than they can handle. The more they can concentrate on your job, the faster it will be completed and with a fewer mistakes.

And finally… 10. Reviews?

Remember, being involved in a new construction or a renovation project is a huge financial and emotional investment. Take the extra time to do a thorough check on any prospective drywall contractor, their workmanship, references and credentials. There are several places on the web where you can read reviews about their qualification. Such as Homestars.com, Google places or even Facebook.

How To Install Drywall On The Ceiling In Your House

Installing drywall on the ceiling can be challenging when working alone, but with a few minor adjustment to the working process, you can easily accomplish this task on your own. Follow these simple steps as you learn how to install drywall on the ceiling in your house.

  1. Check if the area where you are going to install drywall is clear from electrical wires, ductwork, or protruding pipes. Install furring strips to the framing in order to create a flat, even surface for drywall installation around these obstacles.
  2. To keep it easier mark the wall studs to indicate the locations of the ceiling joists for reference when installing drywall. Also mark the placement of light fixtures and electrical boxes.
  3. To get some leverage and support for raising the drywall sheets to the ceiling when you’re working alone, build a T-brace. Use a 2 foot piece of 1 by 4 and nail it to a 2 by 4. It should be 1 foot higher than the length from the floor to the ceiling.
  4. Start hanging drywall in the corner, where you can use a full sheet. Raise the first sheet to the ceiling so you can get an idea of the placement in relation to the joists.
  5. If you have a friend, ask him to assist you, or alternatively use the T-brace that you have build in the step 3. Raise the first sheet of drywall to the ceiling and slide it snugly into the corner. Install drywall in the way that tapered edges of the sheet are facing the floor.
  6. Screw in the drywall sheets permanently to the ceiling joists using screws. The heads of the screws you choose should come in contact with the paper, sinking in slightly without breaking through the paper.
  7. Proceed to install drywall along the first wall, always make sure that the tapered edges abut one another and are facing down. The tapered edges are designed to make the taping, mudding and sanding process easier.
  8. To enforce the stability of your ceiling, start the second row with a half sheet of drywall in order to stagger the seams.
  9. Measure and mark the cut line at the vertical midpoint of the drywall sheet. Use a straightedge to help guide your utility knife as you cut. Tip the panel off of the floor or table at a slight angle, then push it down to break it in half. Use the utility knife to cut through the paper backing.
  10. Install panels over vents or light fixtures loosely at first. Use a rotary drill to cut out a border for the fixture or vent, and then fully attach the board.
  11. Complete installation of drywall on the entire ceiling of your house and only then proceed to install drywall on the walls.

In case you don’t want to install drywall alone, you can hire professional experts. In the video below see how our installers hang drywall on the ceiling on one of our custom home projects in Toronto.

Sound Insulation for Noise Movement Suppression Solutions

Sound insulation is vital in the restriction of noise from being a disruptive and annoying force. Sound is good, but when its levels reach certain limits, it can become a nuisance to people around you or even to you. Realistically, there is a need for one to live or work in a more conducive environment.

Sound restriction or insulation comes in handy when looking to make this possible. With insulation, you restrict movement and filter sound movement through walls, floors or even ceilings; restricting sound waves into or out of a room.

Drywall Attic Toronto

Sound insulation is majorly used to handle the insulating of noise in businesses, home duplexes or apartments. Insulation applications cover a wide area of our day to day lives. Especially so, for people that work with sound like sound producers, the use of insulation comes in handy. Therefore, to ensure that noise and disturbing sounds are suppressed, finding reliable insulation solutions should be a thing to consider. Fundamentally, to reduce the levels of sound movement in or out of a room; ensuring that everyone is happy.

Drywall soundproofing

When looking for sound insulation solutions, finding professionals to handle the job for you is advised. You need people that have the skill and the knowledge to handle noise suppression and sound movement restriction to handle the job for you. The insulation process uses several types of materials and equipment to make it successful. The materials majorly used are in the form of acoustic foams, sound tapes, clips, specially formulated sound glue, noise restricting boards and specially designed pads.

When used to make a room sound proof, these materials are placed or installed within walls, floors and ceilings- objects that sound waves travel through. As such, sound insulation solutions reliably lower or cancel the noise movement from one room to another, offering considerable peace and calm to those around you.

Soundproofing made easy: Get the right materials, products and professionals for the best proofing job

Sound is a powerful energy that can be a major nuisance to people. Be it sound from our homes or offices, or sound from the external sources, it can be a major headache if not handled appropriately. As such, there is a need to ensure that you find a good way to have the problem covered and handled for an improved, more silent living environment. One of the best ways to accomplish this is to soundproof a specific room, office or even your whole house. Soundproofing works by withholding excess decibels of sound from travelling into or out of a room. This lets you and others around you an easier time without excess sound or noise disturbance- ultimately lowering chances of calling the police on you.
QuietGlue
When looking for the ultimate soundproofing experience for your home or office, then going for the best soundproofing option available is the best thing that you can do. Soundproof classes come in different levels and each stands on its own pedestal on how well it delays, absorbs or restricts noise transmission. STC- sound transmission class is the standard at which noise reduction levels are measured on. The higher the STC level- above 60- the lower the sound transmission in or out of a room, house or building .This means that for you to block the most amount of sound from travelling out or in to a room, you need a good and powerful soundproof solution that will hold off all the noise. QuietRock ES Type X
Soundproofing mostly relies on installing a soundproof drywall and adding layers of necessary soundproof material that will keep off vibration and sound waves. There are several options available in sound proofing and which range from; adding a new layer of drywall to the existing drywall effectively lowering sound transmission; adding a sound deadening soft, fibrous board on to the wall which essentially absorbs sound; the other option is adding mass loaded vinyl on your drywall, this is one of the most effective soundproofing options; adding green glue on to your wall and drywall, which boosts an effect known as damping, where sound vibration is converted into energy, effectively cutting noise transmission; and the last, most effective option available is where channel, green glue, resilient clips and drywall are all used to sound proof a room for the best soundproofing experience.
The latter option requires a professional installer to have it installed. This option calls for removing of your existing drywall and have another put in place. This option capitalizes on all four elements for effective soundproofing; that is absorption, mass, decoupling and damping. This option offers 61 and 66 STC and comes in two options of insulation. The 61 STC has two 5/8 inch layers of drywall and 7/8 inches of drywall furring channel held in place with 24” OC stud spacing and a whisper clip on one 5/8 inch drywall layer. The 66 STC soundproofing option has two 5/8 inch drywall layers plus 2 tubes of 4×8 sheet of green glue plus a 7/8 inch drywall furring channel at 24” on center spacing and a whisperclip on one 5/8 inch drywall layer.
With this soundproofing option you have the best sound elimination option installed in place for a working noise reduction solution. However, this option is the most labor intensive and requires experienced and well trained soundproofing experts to handle its installation. That is why when looking to have the ultimate soundproofing tasks done for you, take time and find a good soundproofing company in Toronto to handle the soundproof drywall task. It may seem rather costly, but the overall job will leave you to enjoy the best experience in sound quality and noise reduction.
Make sure that the company you go for will use to some of the best quality materials for the job. Types of Drywall. Part I. Moisture and Mold Resistant Drywall

You started your big project – house renovation, basement or addition building. You have already dived deeply into the world that until now seemed so far away and mysterious – the world of construction. You have started to easily operate such terms as drywall studs, blow insulation and corner beads. But still sometimes you feel your head is going to explode trying to digest and make sense of all this new info.

In this series of articles we will try to cover the basics of various drywall types, help you understand the difference between them and figure out which to use for your particular project. We will start with moisture and mold resistant varieties of this product.

What is Drywall?

First things first, let’s get an understanding of what drywall is. Drywall is a panel made of gypsum plaster sandwiched between two thick sheets of paper and used to finish interior wall and ceilings. Drywall also goes by such names as plasterboard, wallboard or gypsum board.

There are different types of drywall with different characteristics and which type of drywall to use will mainly depend on your needs, requirements and area of application.

We have already touched up on sound proofing types of drywall in this article and will continue the conversation with moisture and mild resistant interior panels varieties.

Greenboard

Greenboard is drywall covered with water resistant paper, the paper is green in color and hence the name of the product. Greeboard is to be used in areas with damp and humid conditions like bathrooms and basements. Important thing here is not to confuse water resistant with water proof and keep in mind that Greenwood cannot be used for wet conditions like shower stalls, for example. Greenboard comes in two sizes – 1/2″ and 5/8″ and is slightly more expensive than regular drywall.

Blueboard

Blueboard is a plaster base board with blue coating made specifically to be finished with veneer plaster. It has high water and mold resistance. Its advantages are those that it is faster to finish walls with veneer plastering as there are less steps involved as opposed to traditional mudding and taping. Plastering however requires a very skilled professional to do it as veneer plaster sets much faster than regular compound and is less forgiving to flaws. Similarly to Greenboard it is used in areas of dampness, like bathrooms and laundry rooms. Pricewise it is a more expensive option than Greenboard

DensArmor Paperless Drywall

DensArmor is a brand name for a new mold and water resistant type of drywall. It is made without paper. Instead, gypsum panel is covered with a fiberglass mat. Since no paper is used, the mold will have nothing to feed on – that’s the idea behind this product. The core of this high-performance interior panel is moisture resistant, however DensArmor does not have water-stopping acrylic coating and similarly to Greenboard and Blueboard is not for wet application. The concern with DensArmor is the rougher surface of the panel as compared to regular drywall, therefore it requires skim coat of joint compound to achieve a smooth finish.

Also, since it is made of fiberglass, some precautions need to be taken when working with this material – wear long sleeves, pants that cover your legs, dust mask, gloves and goggles during installation and after finishing the work rinse off with cool water.

Hope this mini guide to different types of water and mold resistant drywall panels will help you get a better idea of what you need for your particular project.

Will continue this series with the articles on fire-rated panels and different thicknesses of drywall. Stay tuned.

In the meantime feel free to contact DryWallTaping.ca for a professional advice and estimate of your project.

Soundproofing Toronto

Continuing our topic of soundproofing started with this post here, we would like now to talk about the project we finished a couple of weeks ago.

IMG_4331

We were renovating a townhouse built back in the 70’s for new owners. What we faced there was something quite common for Toronto old houses built using plaster. As we know although being a great material with pretty good sound and thermal insulating properties, it tends to age with unsightly cracks and crumbles. And once it starts to crack the problem becomes literally interminable – door slammed, heavy truck passed by – all results in more cracks. Thus repairing and patching these walls makes no sense and removing the existing plaster and replacing it with new is a very pricey option accompanied by the difficulty of finding a right contractor willing to do the job. Having said that, what are the options that house owners not willing to compromise on sound insulation have when deciding to embark on the renovating project?

You can definitely build a layer of drywall over the plaster. This way you keep the benefits of the plaster and get nice smooth walls. It’s a good option if you have some extra space you can sacrifice by loosing couple of inches to drywall. Also building drywall over plaster changes the relief between the wall and the window and door trim, and skirting boards. This will result in an unattractive change in proportion.

Another difficulty is when you have a stairwell adjacent to your neighbors’ wall. In this case you cannot afford to lose any of the stairwell’s width to an extra layer of drywall as you cannot make your stairs narrower than 36″ required by the construction code. Simple and logical replacement of the old plaster with regular drywall is not a solution either as in this case you will be losing all of the so much needed sound proofing.

That was exactly the case we had with our recent project when we were required to remove the old plaster from the stairwell wall and build the wall with excellent sound insulating properties instead as the owners were concerned about the noise coming from 4 guys in their 20’s living next door. Therefore they asked us for the maximum noise reduction. What did we do?

IMG_4264

QuietRock and Green Glue

For this project we decided to go the tried and tested route – remove the plaster and then install one layer of QuietRock. QuietRock is a sound damped panel that offers outstanding sound proofing and sound reduction performance. We have used this product in a number of projects and got very encouraging results. We especially recommend it in the instances when the space and time are very sensitive factors.

We used QuietRock ES type X – an easy to install 5/8″ panel with acoustic rating of up to STC 55 and one hour fire rating – it ideally fitted our requirements.

Significant sound reduction cannot be achieved by using only one product, it is always a combination of methods that provides positive results. Therefore we decided to back up the QuietRock with Green Glue – high performance damping compound.

Normally we would also suggest decoupling the wall to stop the noise from traveling but this time it was impossible to do because our owners’ and neighbours’ staircases shared the same wall. To compensate for that we used two layers of Green Glue (2 tubes per 4’x8′ sheet) instead of regular one layer.

This approach allowed us to keep the staircase space and save on labour and time. The result we got in the end was not only comparable to the sound reducing capabilities of the plaster but even excedeed it.

Soundproof your home

 QuietRock ES EZ-SNAP

Soundproofing your home, basement  or Condo can be a great investment which can increase an overall comfort of your home as well as the market value of your house if you consider selling it in the future.

What are the situations when you might consider sound insulating your home?

  • You live in a townhouse and are constantly being disturbed by the noise your neighbors are making.
  • You hear all the sounds your neighbours produce and feel that your sweet home doesn’t provide you with the privacy and serenity you were hoping for when signing a mortgage agreement.
  • You are building a media room in your basement and don’t want the entire household shake in fear when you are relaxing to the sounds of your favorite heavy-metal band.
  • Your kid has decided to become a world famous drummer and is practicing day and night driving all the living creatures in the 10 mile radius crazy.
  • You are such a light sleeper whose sleep is easily perturbed by any noise and you want to shield your bedroom from the rest of your house.
  • You wish to insulate your laundry room as it is located to close to the common areas of your house.

Any of these and much more gives you sufficient ground to consider soundproofing your house.

In this post we will talk about the method of noise control our company has been using and recommends to clients willing to take their house to a new comfort level.

How to effectively soundproof your room?

There are different ways to sound insulate your house with the choice depending on your needs, situation and results you are willing to achieve. In this post we will cover the method that we consider the most effective to provide the best insulation at the most reasonable investment.

The best noise control and maximized performance is achieved by using the combination of 5/8″ drywall sheets, QuietRock soundproofing panels and Green Glue.

First off, why 5/8″ drywall?

Drywall 5/8 FireRated Type X

That’s because it’s a product with better fire rating than regular drywall, it’s stronger and has more mass which is an important factor in noise reduction.

Why QuietRock panels?

QuietRock ES Type X

QuietRock is a soundproofing panel of choice of DrywallTaping.ca. We have installed it in a number of households and have been happy with the results. To sound proof your room you may either use layers of drywall or opt for a sound-damping product like QuietRock ES or QuietRock 535. QuietRock offers outstanding acoustic performance exceeding STC code requirements with only one layer of the product. Which in turn saves your valuable space you otherwise would be sacrifying by installing layers of drywall. By the way, to achieve the same result with regular drywall you would need 8 layers of it.

Another advantage of QuietRock is its EZ-SNAP technology which allows the panels to be scored and snapped (or cut) in the same way as the ordinary drywall. QuietRock is the most effective solution on the market for low frequencies therefore your best bet for insulation home media centers.

Why Green Glue?

QuietGlue

Green Glue is a damping compound with performance that is higher than any product of its type. It can be used in any drywall assembly to damp the sound in order to prevent the vibration from travelling through the building framing. It works very effectively in combination with either QuietRock or 5/8″ drywall.

Things to remember when soundproofing your house

The most important thing to remember when sound proofing your room is that the performance will be defined by the weakest link therefore make sure to seal all the gaps, power outlets etc. To do that we use QuietPutty, an easy to use acoustical putty for use around junction boxes.

Another thing to remember that there are different solutions for soundproofing, it all depends on your needs and house peculiarities. Call us today to schedule an appointment to discuss your situation and figure out a sound insulating method which will work the best for you.
